Why did you want to become a mentor at SAJO?
The goal is a good one. The program is challenging, both practically and intellectually. Cultural exchanges are rewarding and educational.
Can you describe a typical meeting with your mentee?
We had a six-month plan with goals, subgoals, and actions. We followed this plan, but adapted it to the trainee’s own progress and questions. A typical session: 2 hours spent reviewing “homework” (for both of us) and discussing the Working Environment Act, labor-management cooperation, union membership, and rights and obligations in the Norwegian workplace.
What has been the most rewarding for you?
Cultural encounters at the individual level and the opportunity to explain and discuss organized working life and the “Norwegian/Nordic model,”
Have you learned anything new?
Yes, regarding the Russian approach to various issues, the simplification of Norway’s complex social and working life, and, not least, what language proficiency means for integration and success.
