Making Sense of Emotions: How to adapt to change by addressing the overlooked emotional barriers to integration and retention

Sammen Om En Jobb, in partnership with The Emotional Health Project is organizing this event.

Migration changes more than your address — it changes your sense of self. Beyond losing friends, family, and networks, many migrants experience losses of important values: personal and professional identity, confidence, purpose, hope, and belonging. With all these losses come many unpleasant emotions — shock, anger, frustration, guilt, denial, depression. These emotional challenges are invisible — yet they often determine whether people truly integrate or eventually leave.

The Emotional Health Project was founded by Ezanne van Niekerk to bridge a gap she saw: the missing focus — the conversation and action needed around the emotional barriers to integration and retention.

She will be leading this introductory session to learn how understanding the useful purpose of emotions can help you:

·      Recognise and recover hurt values

·      Adjust after setbacks

·      Adapt to change with confidence

·      Move forward from stuckness and confusion to clarity

·      Rebuild confidence, purpose, and relationships

By strengthening emotional resilience, we empower migrants to rebuild confidence, restore purpose, and foster connections that make integration meaningful and lasting.

This session is for all migrants — whether you are a skilled professional recruited to Norway, a partner accompanying them, or any migrant who wants to better understand the useful purpose of their emotions and learn how this awareness can support adapting to change with confidence.
